These four little verse serve as an illustration to what Paul has been talking about in chapters 8 and 9 pertaining to our freedom in Christ. He draws their minds to the image of an athlete; a runner and a boxer specifically, and he is encouraging them in their freedom to have the same discipline as an athlete.
